Puerto Rico Edges Netherlands To Advance To WBC Final

Mar 21, 2017 7:08 AM

Puerto Rico defeated the Netherlands 4-3 in 11 innings on Monday night to advance to the championship game at the World Baseball Classic.

Carlos Correa hit a two-run homer in the first inning and scored the winning run.

"When I feel that I'm all excited, I try to calm down, breathe deep and concentrate on what we're doing," Correa said. "This is something that we rehearse every day, so we will be able to do it well at the end."

Puerto Rico, which has outscored opponents 55-18 while going 7-0 in this year's tournament, will play either two-time champion Japan or the United States for the title Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.

Sabathia Feels Good Despite Rough Outing

Mar 13, 2017 7:56 AM

CC Sabathia found a big positive during a rocky spring training outing -- no issues with his troublesome right knee.

The Yankees left-hander lasted just two-thirds of an inning Sunday, allowing six runs and six hits in a 10-2 loss to the Braves.

"The body feels good," Sabathia said. "I was letting some (pitches) go, and I had no problems. As far as the knee, you want to get that out of the way. Make sure you can push off as hard as you can, land and be good. I wanted to accomplish that in the game and I did."

Israel Beats Netherlands To Win Pool A

Mar 10, 2017 7:39 AM

Israel beat the Netherlands 4-2 at the World Baseball Classic in Seoul on Thursday to win Pool A with a 3-0 record.

The country will advance to the second round in their first WBC.

"I think that coming into the tournament, a lot of people saw us as huge underdogs, but we never saw it that way," right fielder Zach Borenstein said. "And as far as what it means for Israel, it's huge. It gives more recognition to baseball and hopefully more attention on baseball and Israel."

The Dutch will advance, too -- both teams had already punched their ticket before the game by virtue of their 2-0 starts in Pool A.

Jacob deGrom was in optimal form in his 2017 Grapefruit League debut.

After missing all of September because of surgery to reposition the ulnar nerve in his right elbow, deGrom returned to action Saturday in the Mets' 3-1 victory over the Astros. He retired six straight Houston hitters and sailed through two innings on 26 pitches before calling it a day.
